Kukui was brought to Hawaiʻi by the first Polynesian voyagers. Kukui trees can grow up to 80ft tall. It is also known as the Hawaiʻi state tree.
Kukui, also known as candlenut’s main use was oil for light. However, it is used in traditional lei, and food. The kukui’s flowers were chewed by parents and given to their children to aid in healing sores in the mouth and on tongue. The sap was used as healing application, such as chapped lips, cold sores, and mild sunburn. The inner bark was used as a red-brown dye for kapa.
